Benefits of replacing old fillings

Fillings have a life span of between five to fifteen years. Therefore, the need and benefits of replacing fillings are important to talk to your dentist about.

The benefits of replacing old fillings are:

Better-looking, whiter fillings
Stronger teeth
Less chance for the bacteria to get in and under the filling increasing decay on the tooth
A lower risk for the filling to fall out or break due to normal every day wear and tear

The types of fillings that you could get are going to be either a direct filling, or an indirect filling.

The indirect fillings are those like caps, or crowns and inlays. These are used usually when there is not enough of a tooth surface to create a sturdy tooth replacement. These fillings usually take a couple of visits to complete.

The direct fillings are the ones that are put in after a dentist has removed the decay and it sits right in or on the tooth. These fillings can be completed in one visit and are usually hard and ready pretty quickly.

There are a couple different fillings that a dentist can place in your mouth in order to fill in the areas of empty tooth, where decay had to be removed. These fillings can come in the dental amalgam, ceramic form, or cast gold alloy. Here are some characteristics of each kind.

Dental amalgam- this stress bearing substance is made from different types of metal, it is usually used when moisture control, hygienic or cost is an over ridding concern with the patient.
Ceramic fillings- these fillings tend to last for a good amount of time. However it is less than the amalgam fillings. There are benefits to the way these fillings look more natural. These fillings can be completed relatively quickly. Also, there is no metallic taste to affect your food and drinks.
Cast gold alloy- these fillings are the longest lasting fillings available. They are also the strongest for normal wear and tear. Gold alloy is a good way to support other forms of fillings in addition to being a good way to strengthen the fillings in teeth.

If fillings are not replaced in a timely manner, the filling will start to separate from the teeth. This is called leaking, and leaking can be a major cause for bacteria to get into the tooth and causes plaque which then causes tooth decay.

The problem with not having regular dental appointment and fillings replaced, is that the decay can not always be seen by brushing, and therefore you may have a tooth or many teeth that are being destroyed and you do not even know it.

With the extreme amount of pressure we put on our teeth every day, it is imperative that we keep our teeth as strong as possible. Old fillings will crack and break as time goes by. The amount of stress we put on our teeth makes it very difficult for fillings to last for a very long time. There are some habits like bad oral care; grinding teeth and smoking that increase the need for replacement of fillings.

In order to know exactly what your teeth need, it is important to make your regular dental appointments and follow through with the suggestions that your dentist informs you are necessary. There may be a need to replace a filling sooner than you think, however there are benefits to replacing those fillings that out weigh the cost.

Smoking's effect on your teeth

Smoking has many negative effects on your teeth. These effects are not all cosmetic; in some cases smoking can cause serious damage. We all have heard that the chemicals in cigarettes have severe effects on our bodies, lungs, heart etc but what does it do to our teeth and gums.

There are the cosmetic effects that cause beautiful people to look less attractive. This is the discoloration and stains in teeth, and the smell from the bad breath. However smoking takes a toll on your mouth in a much deeper way.

The chances of issues with gum disease, tooth loss, decay, and bone loss is higher due to the chemicals that increase the bacteria that cause plaque. The gum diseases that will occur due to smoking, will manifest in the swelling of gums, then will weaken the state of the gums that holds the teeth in place. With this in place, the teeth have nothing to hold on to and will be sure to fall out.

Smoking has a negative effect on the human immune system. In turn this weekend state of immunity against germs, illness, and bacteria means that your body will be at a significantly higher risk for gum and tooth diseases.

Smoking causes a trigger effect for the bacteria in your mouth to feed off of. Everything we eat, drink, or smoke increases the bacteria in our mouth to start creating plaque, however, there are some things like smoking that increase the speed of this process.

In order to help your teeth stay healthy and strong the best answer of course would be to quit smoking. That is going to eliminate the problem, and you can start a treatment with your dentists help to start the repair of your gums and teeth.

However if quitting smoking is not something you wan to do, there are things you can do that may be of some help. Go into your dentist and let him or her know that you smoke. This will help the dentist to know if there are mouthwashes, or toothpastes that can help you.

The dentist may be able to prescribe a medication that can help with the gum disease. There are also cleaning and gum treatments that may help with the recession of the gum line. Also maintaining proper oral hygiene will slow down the process of deterioration. So keep the normal good hygiene practices up.

Flossing, brushing and rinsing your mouth as often as you can will help. The way the bacteria are affected by the smoking is this. When any item uses saliva in your mouth, eating, drinking, smoking etc, you produce the saliva and the saliva has the bacteria, so therefore each time you do any of these things, it is necessary to weaken the state of the bacteria by using proper oral hygiene steps. However, like sweets, sugars, carbohydrates and carbonation there are some things like smoking that trigger the bacteria at a faster and higher rate. That is why for the benefit of your gums and teeth minimizing these habits is so important.

Teeth loss, gum disease and bone disease can have a life changing affect. This is the reason that so often dentists recommend minimizing the choices in life that increase the risk of these problems. It is your mouth, and your teeth, consider how long you would have to live with out your teeth. There are dentures, but nothing will be the same if you loose your teeth, to gum disease and bone disease in your jaw because of smoking.

Smoking has a very negative effect on our teeth, gums and mouth as a whole. Think about your future, next time you think of lighting a smoke, there is much more at risk than just trying to kiss someone and having him or her think you have bad breath. Does using mouthwash really help to care for your teeth? That is a good question that has often times been debated. The answer is dependant on the mouthwash you use.

Mouthwash is as good as the products that are in the mouthwash. There is also a difference in a mouthwash and a mouth rinse pre-wash.

It is important not to think that a mouthwash alone, regardless of what it has in it, can take over for your regular brushing and flossing. Each part of the oral hygiene process is important and cannot be left out.

Antibacterial mouthwashes are often prescribed for infections, thrush and gingivitis.

Mouthwashes with zinc: For people who experience bad breathe often, there may be some relief by using a mouthwash with zinc.

Fluoride rinses: There rinses are good if you need an added boost to the strength of your teeth. These can also be prescribed by your dentist for small children who are in need of extra fluoride for healthy growth.

Combination mouthwashes: These mouthwashes have a little bit of everything. They have antibacterial fighters, zinc, and fluoride among other products that are good for your teeth. It is important to remember that mouthwash is only a part of healthy oral hygiene. When to take children to the dentist

Healthy teeth start at a young age. Taking your children to the dentist is a very important part of having healthy teeth. When do you take children to the dentist?

Many times children do not go to the dentist until there is a problem. This is usually around three to five years old. By this time, there are already caveties that cause pain or at least are requiring fillings.

The best time to start your children on a good oral health care habit is much younger than people think. Start them sucking on a toothbrush as soon as they will not choke on it. And, get them to the dentist at a year old.

There are many reasons to start taking your child to the dentist at this age. Here are the benefits of taking your children in to the dentist at an early age.

Comfort: Children become comfortable to the idea of seeing a dentist when they go and are used to it. Also, if they go at an early age and the check up goes well, then there is no pain and a child is more likely to return again with a good idea in their head about the dentist. Yes, they do remember. It is a positive pattern that is in their head. Remember children retain a great deal of information at a younger age.

Early detection: Getting into the dentist early will make it so that if your dentist does happen to see any problems, they will be able to catch them while they are still simple and quick to fix.

Proper formation: Your children have baby teeth, and yes they do fall out. However, those teeth need to create the healthy spacing for the proper growth of the new teeth. If the teeth in your children's mouth get cavities and fall out, then it will cause problems with the correct growth of the teeth in the future. This will then be a reason for crooked teeth and then much more expensive orthodontic work. The dentist can put in a space maintainer or retainer but that does not make for the perfect natural look that the teeth should have. It is also hard to have a small child have those fixtures in their mouth.

Fun: Ok, I know a dentist is not fun. However with the children's emotional comfort in mind, many dentists now offer an environment that is targeted to the comfort and trust building techniques for children. This is helpful because once a positive habit is build it will create an easier process to taking your children to the dentist. The dentist and their assistants do tend to include some fun things and a more colorful environment then when we were kids.

When you go into the visit, there are things that you can expect:

    You can go with your young child into the room for the visit. Here is a hint though, with an older child, it may go better if you are out of the room.
    A basic exam will happen. This means looking at the teeth, counting the teeth, and checking for any decay on the teeth.
    A gum exam will be done. This is just basic and will be a simple look to make sure there is no infection or problems.
    Some advice on proper care will be offered from the dentist and assistant.
    If there is a need for additional fluoride etc, the dentist will let you know.
    There will also be a future appointment for every six months set up.
    Also there will likely be a discussion on proper brushing and flossing, and a healthy diet that is rich in calcium.

The best way to get your child or children started on a healthy oral hygiene plan is to start the pattern early. Start brushing and flossing as early as possible. Start your dentist appointments as early as one year. Eat a healthy diet. Finally create comfort and positive patterns by being a good example of good oral hygiene.

How important is keeping baby teeth healthy

Baby teeth just fall out. So, how important it is to keep baby teeth healthy? They are very important.

Baby teeth are the natural spacer for the incoming teeth that will last your child their entire life. So in the event that children's teeth become decayed there are a couple things that can happen.

First the teeth can rot and fall out. In the event that they do have to be removed or if they do fall out from decay, then it will cause irregular spacing in the teeth. Then in order to repair the spacing issue, the dentist will have to recommend and prescribe a space maintainer to prevent crooked teeth.

Second, is that the dentist can fix them if they can be fixed. This can be painful to the child, and therefore will also cause a negative impact on the child's memory of the dentist.

It is important to keep your children's baby teeth healthy because if the teeth do not form correctly it can affect the child's way of eating, in addition to their speech and overall health.

Even little babies if not given the proper diet can have decay in their little teeth. Here are a few different issues you may see.

Bottle mouth- this is where the teeth are rotting due to being put to bed with a bottle, or if they have a bottle with sugary drinks. What you will see is pocked, pitted or discolored front teeth. This is a situation that will need a dentists care to fix the problem.

Cavities- the bacteria from saliva, food and drinks cause decay, which in turn cause cavities. With a regular diet, you have about 24 hours before the plaque forms after eating and then the decay starts. This is a situation that you will need to have your dentists care to repair.

Gum disease- is another problem that occurs with young children. You will see swollen or bleeding gums. This is something that should be discussed with your dentist and also will need to have care with brushing and flossing.

Keeping children's teeth healthy is easy. Starting a good oral hygiene process is simply beginning good care at a very young age.

Here are the steps to helping build a good oral hygiene habit with your child.

1.    Start by giving your child a toothbrush as early as you can. You will want to make sure that the child will not choke them selves with the toothbrush.

2.    Next, brush your child's gums. Ok, I know that you do not see teeth, however teeth start to form in the second trimester. So this way you will have your child used to brushing at the time they get the teeth in. Also, it can help with the process of the teeth coming in; the movement can help release the skin around the tooth.

3.    Use mild flavored child toothpaste and floss.

4.    Take your child to the dentist at one year old.

5.    Brush your child's teeth until they are five to seven years old. This will teach them the correct process of brushing, and will also make it so that the child is not taking in too much fluoride by swallowing the toothpaste. Normally a small child will not have the dexterity to brush their teeth completely.

6.    Teach your child to floss daily, along with brushing their teeth.

7.    Encourage a healthy diet and reduced sweets, carbohydrates and carbonated drinks.

With this in mind, now you are prepared to help your child have a healthy set of teeth and gums for their lifetime. Keeping baby teeth healthy will set the foundation for well-shaped, strong and beautiful teeth for a beautiful smile.

How to teach your children to brush effectively

Good oral health care forms in the earlier parts of childhood. However for the brushing to be effective, it is important for a parent to assist in the brushing of the children's teeth for the first few years of brushing.

For brushing to be effective it needs to be done for two minutes. This is one of the main reasons that a parent needs to help a child learn to brush. Use a timer to make the process more fun. Show them a goal and help them reach this goal. The brushing habit starts in whichever way it is taught. Therefore, if it is taught to be a fast, and less thorough process, a child will continue through life with that process. If however the process is taught correctly and with detail, then you will be teaching those children to brush their teeth so that their teeth with last them their lifetime.

Be a good example to your children when you are teaching good oral hygiene. This will show them first of all what to do and also will help them learn the importance of brushing and flossing their teeth. Children love to be like their parents.

Flossing is a very important part of oral hygiene. With this in mind, you will need to teach your children to floss just as much as you will need to teach them to brush. Flossing is something that can be fun. With around 12 inches of floss wrapped around their tiny index fingers, show them how to move the floss in a C-shape motion slowly back and forth, using care not to snap the floss against their gums. Irritating the gums will make a child less likely to be willing to try the flossing again.

Track the brushing patterns of your children on a chart with stickers. Make this a daily part of the brushing process, therefore showing a pattern to your children and also assisting them in setting and reaching their goal of good oral hygiene.

Use a toothbrush that is comfortable for your child to put all the way into the back area of their teeth. Also, use toothpaste that is pleasurable to the taste buds. This will be more alluring when you are trying to get the child to brush. Also, encourage your child to rinse with a fluoride rinse. This will help with strengthening the tooth.

Be sure when you are helping your children to brush and rinse, that they do not swallow the paste, or rinse as to much fluoride is somewhat bad for digestion. However if they swallow a little it will likely not do too much to them. Use only a small pea size of toothpaste and only a very small amount of rinse.

Children should go to the dentist the first time at about one year old. This is a great time to get your children familiar with brushing regularly. At a younger age, as soon as the risk of choking from the toothbrush is no longer there, you can also give your child their toothbrush and let them play with it. This will let them become familiar with the brush and will also let them see how it feels.

Example and practice makes for a child to learn to brush their teeth effectively. Keep the process up every day and you will see that in time the child will learn and do the brushing on their own when the time is right.

Effective teeth brushing techniques

Brushing your teeth effectively takes some technique and practice. We all know that brushing your teeth three times a day is the right way. But, is that enough? Well not really. Brushing your teeth is only part of good oral hygiene and there is more to good brushing that putting toothpaste on a brush and then running that brush across your teeth. Here are some effective teeth brushing techniques to make sure that the brushing you are doing is getting the best result.

Flossing should come before brushing. In order to effectively brush your teeth, you need to start with flossing your teeth. Use an 18-inch piece of floss wrapped around your

    Start by using short, gentle back and forth strokes. Tilt the brush at a 45-degree angle against the gum line. Now sweep and roll the brush away from the gum line. You will need to focus on the areas between the teeth letting the bristles get between the teeth.
    Also be sure to run the brush along the gum line and in to the back teeth that are hard to reach. Focus on each section, completely cleaning each area with detailed focus.
    Clean the outer area of each section of your teeth.
    The top outside, the bottoms outside, and then move to the inside of each of the teeth.
    After the back and front have been brushed, pay special attention to the chewing surfaces. Then finish with your tongue for the fresh breath you want.
    Also be sure to brush the backside of your front teeth.

Using a toothbrush that has a head that is soft bristles, and a head that is small enough to fit into the back hard to reach places in your mouth is important. A flexible handle tends to help with reaching some of those back teeth also.

If there are problems with using the standard manual brush for two minutes, then look into getting an electronic brush. They tend to clean very well, and some of them can clean more than one tooth at a time. The areas between the teeth need to be cleaned. So in addition to flossing well between the teeth, you will also want to let the bristles get between the teeth and along the gum line.

Be sure to use a good toothbrush in order to get effective tooth brushing going. Any technique is only as good as the tool you use. A toothbrush needs to be replaced every one to three months. Also, the toothpaste you use should have fluoride to protect and strengthen your teeth. The floss you use should be strong enough and thin with a wax coating to slide softly between the teeth without having to be forced.

To help make the most of your brushing process it is a good idea to rinse with a mouthwash that has an antibacterial agent. You can also get a mouthwash that has peroxide for brightening your pearly whites.

Finally, remember the importance of making your regular visits to your dentist. The thorough cleaning by your dentist and check up for any issues and treatments will help your effective brushing make your beautiful healthy teeth last for your lifetime.

Originally mouthwash was only used to get rid of halitosis or bad breath. Now with the advances in oral hygiene care options, there is so much more available. The bacteria in your mouth that is the cause of halitosis is a problem that plagues well over half of the population.

There are other health issues that can also cause halitosis, stress, unhealthy diet, tooth rot, etc. Mouthwash is not a cure for those problems. There are benefits to using mouthwash. There is also ways that you can make your mouthwash work more effectively for you.

Most mouthwashes are designed to last around 3 hours. These mouthwashes eliminate the bacteria that cause bad breath. These bacteria break down the protein in your mouth causing bad breath. Therefore if you remove these bacteria, then you remove the bad breath. However, there are a few mouthwash products that only mask the breath. This does not remove the bacteria; therefore it only covers the bad breath for around 30 minutes and is not helping your oral hygiene.

There are simple yet effective tips to making your mouthwash work for you:

1.    Floss then brush your teeth 3 times per day with fluoride toothpaste.
2.    Use the specified amount of mouthwash or mouth rinse. Warm the mouthwash up a little.
3.    Place the mouthwash in your mouth with your lips closed and teeth together, then swish the mouthwash back and forth as hard as you can, so to get between the teeth.
4.    Be sure to do this around 30 seconds, unless instructions state otherwise, and make sure to swish all sides, and back and forth.
5.    Clean your tongue as well as you cleans your teeth. The tongue carries many of the bacteria that are the cause of bad breath.
6.    Use the mouthwash or mouth rinse with fluoride in it.

If the rinse or wash you use has alcohol in it, it may have side affects that will damage the enamel on your teeth, as well as create unnecessary sensitivity to gums and teeth.

Which ever rinse or wash you choose, remember that it is imperative that you maintain your healthy brushing and flossing habits to prevent the damaging decay that will be the cause for tooth loss or gum and bone disease.

Your mouth was will be that much more effective if you follow the steps listed and follow the instructions on your mouthwash.
