Does using mouthwash really help to care for your teeth?

Does using mouthwash really help to care for your teeth? That is a good question that has often times been debated. The answer is dependant on the mouthwash you use.

Mouthwash is as good as the products that are in the mouthwash. There is also a difference in a mouthwash and a mouth rinse pre-wash.

It is important not to think that a mouthwash alone, regardless of what it has in it, can take over for your regular brushing and flossing. Each part of the oral hygiene process is important and cannot be left out.

Antibacterial washes: the antibacterial washes have products that kill bacteria. The bottle you look at will tell you what the mouthwash is intended for. If there are bacteria killing agents it will be stated. The antibacterial washes minimize the total number of anaerobic bacteria in your mouth. With these bacteria creating the volatile plaque in your mouth, on your teeth and tongue, it is important that these are removed. Using the antibacterial mouthwash can help remove these bacteria.

Antibacterial mouthwashes are often prescribed for infections, thrush and gingivitis.

Mouthwashes with zinc: For people who experience bad breathe often, there may be some relief by using a mouthwash with zinc.

Fluoride rinses: There rinses are good if you need an added boost to the strength of your teeth. These can also be prescribed by your dentist for small children who are in need of extra fluoride for healthy growth.

Combination mouthwashes: These mouthwashes have a little bit of everything. They have antibacterial fighters, zinc, and fluoride among other products that are good for your teeth. A common combination mouthwash can help with reducing the bacteria in your mouth that causes plaque and which causes bad breathe.

You can get these mouthwashes and rinses all over the counter. The mouthwashes that you get from your dentist with a prescription are Peridex and Periogaurd. These mouthwashes are used specifically for gingivitis, which is the main cause for inflammation, bleeding and swelling of the gums.

When you are using a mouthwash, especially with fluoride or an antibacterial agent, it is a good idea to talk to your dentist for prolonged use. This is due to the fact that those mouthwashes can stain your teeth and also cause some deficiency in the taste buds.

It is important to remember that mouthwash is only a part of healthy oral hygiene. In order to have the healthiest results for strong and long lasting teeth, you need to floss and brush your teeth daily. Prolonged mouth wash use can have negative affects on the teeth themselves. This is more so if the mouthwash use is done instead of the tooth flossing and brushing. However mouthwash can be helpful in the overall care of your teeth and gums.

If bad breath is a problem, then it is important to get to the dentist because bad breath can also be a sign of other more serious dental problems. This could be a warning sign of gum disease. There can also be decay, filling or crown problems that when the bacteria is getting into spaces that a toothbrush and floss is not able to reach appropriately, then the bacteria is damaging the teeth further. This is why regular dental check ups are so important. Your dentist will be able to detect these types of problems before they become serious.

Six ways to make your mouth wash more effective

Fresh breath and healthy teeth come from good oral hygiene. Mouthwash is an important factor in the equation of healthy teeth. Here are six ways to make your mouthwash more effective.

The use of the liquid oral product mouthwash is used to clean teeth, freshen breath, kill bacteria and whiten teeth. Though, it is only a partner to the main oral health team of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. Mouthwash is considered a good way to help the tried and true oral care cleaners, but it does not work alone. It can be a cause for concern if it is the only thing used to clean a mouth, because it can block the first signs of some serious oral health conditions like tooth decay, gingivitis, among others.

Originally mouthwash was only used to get rid of halitosis or bad breath. Now with the advances in oral hygiene care options, there is so much more available. The bacteria in your mouth that is the cause of halitosis is a problem that plagues well over half of the population.

There are other health issues that can also cause halitosis, stress, unhealthy diet, tooth rot, etc. Mouthwash is not a cure for those problems. There are benefits to using mouthwash. There is also ways that you can make your mouthwash work more effectively for you.

Most mouthwashes are designed to last around 3 hours. These mouthwashes eliminate the bacteria that cause bad breath. These bacteria break down the protein in your mouth causing bad breath. Therefore if you remove these bacteria, then you remove the bad breath. However, there are a few mouthwash products that only mask the breath. This does not remove the bacteria; therefore it only covers the bad breath for around 30 minutes and is not helping your oral hygiene.

There are simple yet effective tips to making your mouthwash work for you:

1.    Floss then brush your teeth 3 times per day with fluoride toothpaste.
2.    Use the specified amount of mouthwash or mouth rinse. Warm the mouthwash up a little.
3.    Place the mouthwash in your mouth with your lips closed and teeth together, then swish the mouthwash back and forth as hard as you can, so to get between the teeth.
4.    Be sure to do this around 30 seconds, unless instructions state otherwise, and make sure to swish all sides, and back and forth.
5.    Clean your tongue as well as you cleans your teeth. The tongue carries many of the bacteria that are the cause of bad breath.
6.    Use the mouthwash or mouth rinse with fluoride in it.

If the rinse or wash you use has alcohol in it, it may have side affects that will damage the enamel on your teeth, as well as create unnecessary sensitivity to gums and teeth.

Which ever rinse or wash you choose, remember that it is imperative that you maintain your healthy brushing and flossing habits to prevent the damaging decay that will be the cause for tooth loss or gum and bone disease.

Your mouth was will be that much more effective if you follow the steps listed and follow the instructions on your mouthwash.
